How to make every scene in an ad share one colour theme

Tell Vizard Agent which scene has the colour you want and which ones should match it. What is the short version?

An ad assembled from separate scenes will drift in colour, and the drift is usually invisible while you are working on one scene at a time. Fixing it starts with a decision about which scene is right, not with a grade.

What do you need before you start?

The cut and a decision. The decision is the harder half: "make it consistent" leaves the direction of the match open, and a reasonable reading of it will sometimes pull your favourite scene towards the one you liked least.

What does Vizard Agent actually do?

Step three is the step that settles arguments. Scenes seen one after another feel different in ways nobody can name; the same scenes seen side by side make the disagreement obvious, and usually make it obvious which one is the odd one out as well.

Step five is the part that keeps the grade honest. Comparing a corrected scene against the reference scene, rather than against a description like "light blue and white", is the only way for Vizard Agent to know whether it actually matches rather than merely moved in the right direction.

Step one is quieter but does real work. Knowing where each scene starts and ends means the grade lands on scene boundaries rather than on a timecode somebody estimated, and a grade that changes mid-shot is far more visible than the drift it was brought in to fix.

What does the result look like?

An ad that reads as one piece. The palette holds from the first frame to the last, the cuts and the timing are exactly where they were, and only the scenes that were out of step have been touched.

The consistency is the sort of thing viewers never notice, which is how you know it worked.

When does this not work well?

Grading moves colour, it does not rebuild light. Scenes shot in genuinely different conditions — daylight against tungsten, or a bright product shot against a dim interior — can be brought closer but not made identical without changing what each one actually shows.

How do you fix a result that came back wrong?

Say which scene still looks wrong, and say which scene you are comparing it against. Vizard Agent keeps the colour comparison and the grade it applied to each scene, so a note about one of them adjusts that scene alone rather than regrading the whole advert over again.
