How to stop a bracketed lyric line pulling the rest of the video out of sync

When does this not work well?

Some brackets really are annotations. A lyric sheet that uses them for section labels, a producer tag or a translation is not describing sung lines, and treating those as lines puts text on screen that nobody is singing, which is worse than the fault you set out to fix. Overlapping vocals need a layout, and a mix that buries the backing can't be timed.
