When does this not work well?
The extension has to invent whatever sat just outside the camera's view, and some shots can't be done convincingly. Detail running off the edge, like a face or a sign half out of frame, makes it hard, and so do camera movement, changing scenes and long clips. Invented architecture in a recognisable place will be noticed. In those cases cropping is the better answer.
