When does this not work well?
The extension has to invent whatever was sitting just outside the camera's view when you filmed, and there are several kinds of shot where that simply cannot be done convincingly. These are the ones where cropping is the better answer.
- Detail running off the edge. A face or a sign half out of frame.
- Camera movement. The extension has to move with it.
- Changing scenes. Each one needs its own extension.
- Recognisable places. Invented architecture will be noticed.
