How to cut a job application video from footage of yourself at work
List the qualities the employer needs to see and let Vizard Agent find the evidence for each. Some of them are in your own words, but the important ones — that a group trusts you, that people enjoy your company — can only be shown through other people's reactions, so the cut is built from those.
What is the short version?
You have hours of footage of yourself running a trip, and you need a few minutes that argue you should be hired. The claim is about your character, and character is shown by its effect on other people. Vizard Agent cuts for the effect.
- Tell Vizard Agent the role and the qualities it must show.
- Let it sort the footage by the kind of evidence each shot gives.
- Expect reaction shots to do the heavy lifting.
What do you need before you start?
The footage and the job. Naming the role changes everything downstream — "coordinator for group trips" implies leadership, warmth and reliability in a way that "make me look good" does not, and each of those needs a different kind of shot.
Say what you will allow. Reordering, dropping duplicates and using some passages as silent B-roll are all things that make this kind of video far better, and they are also things an editor will not assume are permitted with footage of a real event.
What do you type into Vizard Agent?
Give Vizard Agent the role, then the list of qualities, then what you are willing to let it do. That list is the selection criteria for the whole edit, and writing it out honestly is most of the editorial work — everything after it is searching.
This is my application to be a trip coordinator. Find the parts where I come across as a likeable, communicative leader the group is fond of, and also as serious and reliable. You can reorder, cut duplicates and use some parts as B-roll.
That is close to the real brief here, and the pairing matters: likeable and reliable pull in opposite directions, so asking for both forces a cut that shows range rather than one long impression.
What does Vizard Agent actually do?
It sorts before it selects. The speech gets transcribed, the shot changes get mapped separately, and then the footage is split into boards by what kind of evidence it holds — spoken passages, group moments, atmosphere and music — because a claim about leadership needs a different shot than a claim about competence.
In that session the passes ran:
- Transcribed every spoken word and mapped every scene change, then read the two together.
- Built separate boards for the spoken, the group and the musical material.
- Analysed the opening block specifically for moments of reliability and humour.
- Analysed the central presentation together with the group's reactions to it.
- Looked through the travel and musical footage for a climax to end on.
- Hunted the clearest audience reactions during the presentation and during the performance.
That last pass is the one that makes the video work. "Loved by the group" is not in any shot of you talking; it is in the faces of the people listening, and finding those is a separate search from finding your best delivery.
What does the result look like?
A short, paced piece that makes several different claims rather than one. You presenting, cut against the room responding; a serious organisational moment; a lighter one; and an ending with some emotional lift, usually the atmosphere rather than more speech.
The later rounds tend to be about coverage. In that session an alternative side angle of the same presentation was found and swapped in, a closing gag was located and added, and the start of a musical passage was replaced with B-roll of the venue so the entry was not abrupt.
When does this not work well?
When nobody filmed the reactions. If the camera stayed on you the whole time, the evidence for how people responded does not exist, and the cut can only show your delivery. Vizard Agent will tell you that rather than implying warmth with music.
It also struggles if the footage is all one register. An hour of you being competent supports one claim well and the others not at all, and a video that argues a single quality for three minutes reads as thin.
And a group whose faces you have no permission to publish is a real limit. The reaction shots are the strongest material and they are of other people, which is worth settling before the edit rather than after.
How do you fix a result that came back wrong?
Say which quality is under-argued, in those terms. "It shows I can organise but not that anyone actually likes me" points Vizard Agent at one specific search rather than at a general re-edit, and the fix is almost always more reaction coverage rather than more of you.
If a moment you remember is missing, describe it. Vizard Agent can find a specific gag or exchange from your description and will say whether it lost on delivery, on picture quality or because a stronger version of the same point already made it in.
If the music is covering your voice, say so. On a video whose whole purpose is how you come across, the speech has to stay fully forward, and that balance took two passes in the session behind this article.
How does Vizard Agent compare to doing it yourself?
Cutting your own application video is uncomfortable work. You know which moments you liked, which is not the same as which moments are evidence, and almost everyone ends up with a reel of themselves talking well and nothing showing their effect on anyone.
Sorting the footage by what it is evidence of is the step that changes the outcome. It is mechanical rather than clever — transcript, scene map, boards by type — and it surfaces the reaction shots that you would not think to go looking for.
Common questions
How long should it be? Short enough to watch in one go. Vizard Agent reports the length rather than filling a target.
Can it reorder the footage? Yes, if you allow it. Say so and Vizard Agent builds for argument rather than chronology.
Will it use my whole speech? No. Vizard Agent takes the strongest passages and drops the repeats and restarts.
What about background music? A light bed helps. Vizard Agent mixes it well under your voice and checks the balance.
Do I need captions? Useful if it will be watched without sound. Ask and Vizard Agent adds them.
Can it find a specific moment I remember? Yes, from a description. Vizard Agent will say why it was or was not used.
What if there are two camera angles? Better. Vizard Agent can cut between them on the same presentation.
Should it end on speech? Usually not. Atmosphere or a reaction makes a stronger close.
Can it add a title card? Yes, with your name and the role. Vizard Agent checks it is readable at full size.
What if the footage is horizontal and I need vertical? Vizard Agent reframes, keeping you and the reactions in shot.
Can I supply more footage later? Yes. Vizard Agent integrates a new recording against the boards it already built.
Does it edit out my mistakes? Hesitations and restarts, yes. Vizard Agent keeps the personality.
How does it judge "likeable"? By the reactions around you, not by your own performance.
Can I get a longer version for a portfolio? Yes, from the same selection, as a separate cut.
