How to make a blurry video look clearer

What do you need before you start?

What does the result look like?
From the run this page is written from, probed on the delivered file: 1080x2340, H.264, 30fps, 230.37 seconds, AAC audio. Nearly four minutes at the phone's own tall aspect ratio, kept rather than normalised, because the destination was the same phone it came from.
Say the target resolution explicitly if you need one. Vizard Agent otherwise picks from the source and the destination, and "make it 4K" is a legitimate instruction it will follow.
What "clearer" means in practice is usually three smaller changes at once: a little more resolution, a little more local contrast, and a lift in the shadows so the picture stops looking muddy. Vizard Agent applies them together and in proportion to what the frames showed, which is why the result reads as a better version of your video rather than a processed one.

When does this not work well?
Enhancement redistributes and reconstructs what is already in the file. It cannot recover detail that was never recorded in the first place, and every technique that appears to add detail is really inventing something plausible in its place, which is fine on a phone and much less fine on a large screen.
- Upscaling does not add real detail. A 480p source made 4K is a large soft picture. It can look better on a phone and it will not survive a television.
- Compression artefacts get sharpened too. Sharpening a blocky video makes the blocks crisper. Vizard Agent tests for this, and there is a limit to how much can be done.
- Motion blur is permanent. A shot that was blurred by movement has no sharp frame underneath to recover.
- Faces are where invention shows. Reconstruction can subtly change a face, which matters if the person is recognisable to your audience.
- A better source beats any processing. If the original file exists anywhere, finding it is worth more than everything on this page.
How do you fix a result that came back wrong?
Say which way it went wrong. Vizard Agent keeps the frame grid, the analysis and the settings it chose, so backing off the sharpening or trying a different approach works from the inspection it already did rather than starting over.
- "Too sharp, it looks crunchy." The sharpening is reduced without touching anything else.

Common questions
Can it make an old video 4K? It can output at 4K. Whether that looks good depends entirely on the source, and a small soft original stays soft at any size.
Will it change how people look? Reconstruction can subtly alter faces. Say "keep it conservative" if the people are recognisable to your audience.
Can it fix the audio at the same time? Yes, and asking for both in one job means Vizard Agent inspects the file once instead of twice.
Should I send the original or a copy? Always the original. Every re-encode between the camera and Vizard Agent throws away detail that cannot be recovered.
Does it help with old scanned or tape footage? Somewhat. Vizard Agent can clean and stabilise what is there, and the grain and softness of the original format are part of the recording rather than a defect to remove.
