Steps five and six are the technique worth stealing. To check whether a graphic followed, you have to find the graphic — so its own coloured edges are isolated from the lines already in the picture, and its position is read off each second. That turns "does it look attached" into a number per second.
Step seven is the kind of fault that only surfaces this way. The overlay was being drawn in a way that left the transparent pixels' alpha untouched, so the box was there and also not there — visible on some frames, gone on others, and impossible to diagnose by watching.
What does the result look like?
