How to make a YouTube banner that matches your videos

When does this not work well?
A banner is one image doing several jobs at several sizes, and most of its constraints come from the platform rather than the design. The safe area is narrow, because phones show a thin strip, and text near the edges gets cropped on smaller screens. Low-resolution portraits soften at banner size, and a channel with no style yet gives nothing to extract.
